Thousands gather in Boston’s Seaport for Boston While Black Family Reunion

They traveled, some with lawn chairs in tow, for a day of family, community, and Black joy.

Their destination on Saturday was the Boston While Black Family Reunion, a free event that drew thousands to the Seaport, a neighborhood with a reputation for being one of Boston’s whitest and most expensive.

“It’s about Black community coming together. This collective energy, you can’t find really nowhere else in the city of Boston,” said Jumaane Kendrick, a Roxbury resident who works for the youth organization MissionSAFE.

Testimonial

“There’s nothing more rewarding to me than seeing a city-kid on a boat for the first time — smiling, confident, and amazed after catching their first fish. To keep our program running, we rely on the generosity and support of programs like the MCCA’s Community Partnership Grants. Their commitment to community programs, particularly youth programs, makes our small operation and all those smiles possible.”

Boston Convention & Exhibition Center renamed after former Boston mayor Thomas Menino

On Saturday, hundreds gathered inside the Seaport’s Boston Convention & Exhibition Center for its renaming to the Thomas Michael Menino Convention and Exhibition Center — paying tribute to Boston’s longest-serving mayor, who pushed for development in the Seaport.

During the rededication ceremony, big-name local politicians, including Mayor Michelle Wu and members of the Massachusetts congressional delegation, spoke about Menino’s legacy. The crowd responded warmly, with bursts of laughter at anecdotes and loud applause at certain points.

“It is entirely fitting that we attach Tom Menino’s name to this institution, which is so often the first place to host and to welcome so many visitors to Boston,” US Representative Stephen Lynch said at the ceremony. “Thank you to Tom Menino for a wonderful career of public service.”
