See the $550 million Omni hotel planned for Boston's Seaport

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh this week joined executives from Omni Hotels and Resorts to break ground on another hotel in the city's Seaport District.

When the $500 million hotel opens in 2020, it'll be the city's fourth largest, with 1,055 guest rooms and 52 suites at the top of the 21 floors.

The pool deck will offer views of Boston Harbor and Logan Airport in the distance. Omni executive also plan an "all-day restaurant and collaborative workspace," as well as a French brasserie and boulangerie.

The hotel will also have 100,000 square feet of meeting and event space.

The hotel, down the street from the sprawling Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, is getting built on two acres of land owned by Massport, the quasi-public state agency that runs Logan Airport.

"This groundbreaking not only signifies the strong economic progress happening in the city of Boston, but also the fundamental building blocks of opportunity we are creating for our workforce," Massport CEO Thomas Glynn said in a statement.

"We are also excited to see that the chance we took of adding a diversity criteria has paid dividends, and the outcome so far has been outstanding," he added. "We look forward to further strengthening our partnership with Omni Hotels as we watch this project evolve into a key destination for visitors from across the state and country."

According to Omni, the project will create roughly 1,100 construction jobs and between 700 and 1,000 permanent jobs once the hotel opens.

At the moment, the project is going by Omni Boston Seaport Hotel, though that could change.

Boston Business Journal reported that the day before the groundbreaking, Fidelity Investments filed a lawsuit against Omni, arguing that "Omni Boston Seaport Hotel" can't be used because Fidelity trademarked "Seaport Hotel" in 1998 and the name is already in use at a hotel across from the World Trade Center.
