Springfield Thunderbirds set to appear on Friday’s CBS Evening News

How hard is it to be a goalie?

After an emergency backup goalie made his NHL debut over the weekend, CBS Evening News sent Steven Hartman on a mission to answer that question.

The Springfield Thunderbirds just so happened to have an answer.

Hartman made his way to the MassMutual Center earlier this week, interviewing Thunderbirds goalie Chris Driedger before suiting up in T-Birds apparel. Henrik Borgstrom took a few shots with the reporter in goal, showing just how challenging it is to play between the pipes.

On Saturday, emergency backup and Zamboni driver David Ayres earned a win in net after both of the Carolina Hurricanes’ goalies were injured in a game with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 42-year-old made eight saves to help the Hurricanes to a 6-3 win.

The Thunderbirds’ story will air on Friday, Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. Take a look at some of the behind-the-scenes footage from the day in the video below.
